José Craveirinha prize launchedMozambican novelists Paulina Chiziane and Mia Couto have received the first José Craveirinha prize, recently established by the Association of Mozambican Writers (Associação dos Escritores Moçambicanos) and the Cahora Bassa Hydroelectric company. The US$5,000 prize was awarded for Chiziane's Niketche - uma historia da poligamia (Niketche - a story of polygamy) [Click here to read a review] and Couto's Um Rio Chamado Tempo e Uma Casa Chamada Terra (A River Called Time and a House called Land) [Click here to read a review]. The $5,000 prize is to be awarded every year and is named after the Mozambican poet who died in February 2003. He is regarded as a national hero. All Mozambican writers, writing in any genre, are eligible to enter. The entry must be published by a Mozambican publisher between June 1 and May of the following year. A jury will be selected in June of each year and the prize will be announced in August of each year.
